Namia McCallop & Naheemah McMicheaux mccallop

my crown my way book

“My Crown, My Way,” is written by Naheemah McMicheaux McCallop and her seven-year-old daughter, Namia McCallop. The coming-of-age story follows a young Black girl’s journey to self-discovery about the uniqueness of her natural hair. The book pays homage to the historic CROWN Act and challenges young readers everywhere to celebrate cultural diversity and embrace the beauty of protective and natural hairstyles.

The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act was created by four black women, designed to prohibit race-based hair discrimination and stop the denial of employment and educational opportunities for men and women of color based on their textured or protective hairstyles. The act is not a law in all 50 states yet, and without federal legislation, the loophole in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that protects race but not hair as a trait correlated with race will continue to allow race-based hair discrimination to be legal in public schools and the workplace.

The McCallops’ main goal is to spotlight the importance of embracing natural hair and honoring the rich tapestry of cultures that enrich our global community. Through the pages of their vibrant children’s book, young readers embark on an inspiring adventure that promotes a sense of pride, self-expression, and understanding. Inspired by the powerful movement to end hair discrimination and elevate cultural awareness, “My Crown, My Way” is a social-emotional-learning, multi-generational engaging children’s book that is poised to make a positive impact on young minds, nurturing a generation that values and celebrates the beauty of diversity.

This book is for people who want to create an inclusive world where we embrace the beauty of textured, protective, and natural hairstyles in schools, and the workplace.

The authors wrote this book with the confidence that it could make a change. Together, we can end race-based hair discrimination and help every child feel beautiful and confident in their crown, but we need your help to make this happen. Please join us in this journey to creating a more inclusive world for all.

We aim for families and educational institutions across the U.S. to use this book as a learning resource so that children can have a healthy conversation about their hair, heritage, culture, and celebrate the beauty of diversity.

Together, we can make hair discrimination illegal! Your purchase of this book will help educate about the importance of the C.R.O.W.N. Act and continue to create the psychologically space for the needed and healthy conversations that celebrate the beauty of cultural diversity.
